| Scavenge pump protection - 20 February 2009 |
| There have been a number of recent scavenge pump failures due to larger items being ingested by the scavenge pump and this causing the pump to seize and break the drive chain. Once the chain has broken the symptoms are loss of oil pressure shortly afterwards and no oil in the dry sump tank. On refilling the dry sump tank the oil pressure is briefly regained but only until the dry sump tank is emptied. The engine should not be run any more than critically necessary to establish a diagnosis. This failure can typically happen if a finger follower shim pops out during running or is lost during a service whilst checking clearances. Because TVR offer no protection to the scavenge pump as standard the pump can suffer from debris passing through it. Racing Green TVR now offer a full "protection kit" which comprises of a new filtered sump baffle plate and front filter plate. When these 2 parts are fitted the scavenge pump is protected from larger pieces of debris passing through it and leading to expensive component failure. The Racing Green TVR sump baffle plate is a direct replacement for the standard TVR component and the front plate fits in front of the scavenge pump and mounts on the standard fixing bolts and prevents any larger parts passing into the front chamber of the scavenge pump. These 2 parts are heavily recommended to anyone rebuilding a TVR Speed 6 engine as they offer significant benefits with no down sides. |
